Technology junkies

Published by Z Gamblin Man under Comments

Tech junkiesWhoever said that technology would give us more free time and relieve us from the daily grind was obviously wrong. Most of us are technology junkies waiting for a bigger and stronger fix. This comes in the form of wanting more features on our computers, cell phones and other assorted gadgets. We will wait in line for days to get the latest phone so we can be the first one to show it off to our friends. Technology can save us time if applied properly but how many of us truly use it toward that end. We find reasons to stay on the Internet for hours when we could be reading a book, tend to a garden or take a walk.

We find all kind of excuses why we need to be on the Internet. The addict also can rationalize his addiction. Wonder what would happen if the Internet totally stopped one day. I know, I know, that’s why the Internet was invented so that mass communication could never be completely halted. But imagine it happening, would you have Internet withdrawal symptom? Would you crave to check your email just once even if there was only spam in your inbox? Would you feel technology naked without your cell phone? Would the inner peace you felt by not being disturbed at anytime cause you anxiety attacks?

Time to end this post now. It’s already been 30mn and I have to check my voice messages, my email, download photos I took today, do some editing on my website, add several podcasts to my ipod and Skype a couple of friends in Paris.

So you want to be famous

Published by Z Gamblin Man under Comments

Andy Warhol once said that everyone would be famous for fifteen minutes. Judging by all the reality shows on tv, it appears that he was right. Of course this is not true fame. In order to become truly famous, have wealth, be loved and recognized by the public, you must be prepared to sell your soul. At least Dr. Faustus wanted power and knowledge. PaparraziYou are willing to sell your soul for much less. Once you’re famous, you have lost control of your destiny. People around you organize your life and their lives revolve around you. You have lost your privacy, you belong to the world but you can’t go out in the world. No more intimate dinners in restaurants or family outings. If you try, you will have to share the experience with your many fans and your body guards.  Newspapers print the truth about you half the time and you can’t believe what they print about you the rest of the time. You can’t take a bad photo and please don’t age. You can’t make new friends since you never know if they truly like you or just want to be with someone famous. Enjoy your fame if you can, but don’t look back, there is already someone younger and more handsome or prettier ready to take your place. Then one day you walk in the street and no one knows you or wants to take your picture. Fame is no longer interested in you but now you are ready to become a human being again.

I could’ve been a contender

Published by Z Gamblin Man under Comments

If you have a dream, make sure you stay focused on that goal. Never let anyone deter you from pursuing your dream. If you don’t follow through, you On the waterfrontwill regret it for the rest of your life and wonder what if. Don’t listen to people who tell you it can’t be done. The world is full of naysayers who for a variety of reasons will tell you that your dream is impossible to realize. Some are just jealous, some are just pessimists who see the world as a cold and scary place. Surround yourself with people who share your enthusiasm. If you do, you will stay in a positive environment. Friends will reinforce each other’s goals. As the saying goes, “reach for the stars but keep your feet on the ground”. It may take some time so as you move toward your goal, do keep a  healthy lifestyle. You don’t want to reach the promised land but be unable to enjoy it.

Free but it’s going to cost you

Published by Z Gamblin Man under Comments

Free sign
Free is the most overused word in the English language. Read any newspaper or listen to any TV program and the word free will soon pop up. Free is never free. You must usually buy something to get the free item. It’s amazing how advertisers still think they can fool us with this approach. Let’s face it, if they gave us something for free they would be losing money. Usually the word free is headlined in big bold letters. You will need a magnifying glass to read the fine prints that dictates how free the product really is.

Another way that free is not free is when you are told the product is free but you will need to pay for shipping and handling. Handling is one of those mystery term which can mean almost anything. You can be sure that even though it is supposed to be free, the handling fee will cover the cost of the product and then some. Now there are genuine free offers but usually those do not cost anything to the entity making the offer. Free signups, free registration, join for free are all examples of these types of offers. But the worst offenders are those that invite you for a free seminar whether to buy real estate for no money down or foreclosures or whatever. Once you are at the seminar they try to sell you books, tapes or sign you up for a follow up seminars when supposedly they will teach you their secrets on making millions. These follow up seminars will cost you from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

So the next time you see something that is offered for free, make sure to bring along some money.
