The vampires in your house

Published by Z Gamblin Man under Technology

Vampires cost the american household in excess of 3 billion dollars each year. Don’t go looking for them after dark, they’re right in front of you. These vampires suck money from you day and night. They come in the shape of computers, televisions, DVD players, satellite receivers, stereos, kitchen appliances and other electrical devices such as chargers. Today the off button only means standby. Even when turned off, most of your electrical appliances are still using electricity. Not only is power wasted but since most of the electricity here in the U.S. is generated by fossil-fuel power plants, this contribute greatly to the production of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

If you want to check how much power each of your appliances is consuming while in stand by mode, you can buy a small device called a “Kill a watt”. You plug in your appliances into the device and it will show you how much this device is costing you while on standby. Today there is no regulation requiring manufacturers to tell you how much electricity is consumed while their appliances is in the off mode. It’s up to you in order to save energy to unplug any small device not in use. For bigger appliances and hard to reach outlets, you can plug in your appliances to smart power strips. You choose which appliances must be  turned on all the time. The smart strips turns off completely all the other appliances. You can check online how much those vampires are costing you, here is the link.
